Produce

Judges: Mrs Nest Wyn Jones and Mrs Menna Coleclough

PR9 – Victoria Sandwich, jam filled – 3 egg recipe baked in a 7″ tin

PR10 – Fruit cordial – bottled and labelled

PR11 – A jar of chutney – labelled

PR12 – Set recipe – Quiche Lorraine (see below for details)

Pastry Ingredients:

175g / 6oz plain flour, plus extra for dusting
75g / 2¾oz butter, plus extra for greasing the flan dish
Pinch of salt

Filling Ingredients :

250g / 9oz cheddar cheese, grated
100ml / 3½fl oz milk
4 tomatoes, sliced
200ml / 7fl oz double cream
200g / 7oz streaky bacon, chopped
5 free-range eggs, beaten

2 sprigs fresh thyme
Freshly ground black pepper

Method:

To make the pastry, sift the flour together with a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Rub in the butter until you have a soft breadcrumb texture.  Add enough cold water to make the crumb mixture come together to form a firm dough, and then rest it in the fridge for 30 minutes.  Roll out the pastry on a light floured surface and line a 22cm / 8½in well-buttered flan dish.  Don’t cut off the edges of the pastry yet.  Chill again.

Preheat the oven to 190C / 170C Fan / Gas 5.

Remove the pastry case from the fridge and line the base of the pastry with baking parchment and then fill it with baking beans.  Place on a baking tray and bake blind for 20 minutes. Remove the beans and parchment and return to the oven for another five minutes to cook the base.

Reduce the temperature of the oven to 160C/140C Fan/Gas 3.

Sprinkle the cheese into the pastry base and add the sliced tomatoes. Fry the bacon pieces until crisp and sprinkle then over the top.  Combine the eggs with the milk and cream in a bowl and season well.  Pour over the bacon and cheese.  Sprinkle the thyme over the top and trim the edges of the pastry.

Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until set. Allow to cool and set further.

Only Men Allowed

Judges: Mrs Nest Wyn Jones and Mrs Menna Coleclough

PR13 A Doorstop – Any Medium

PR14 – Photography – “Open”

PR15 – Set Recipe – Iced Apricot Fruit Loaf (See recipe details below)

An individual prize of a bottle of whisky and shield donated by Mrs. Janice Baldwin-Evans will be awarded to the exhibitor gaining the most points overall in the Only Men Allowed section (over 18 years), alternatively an equivalent cash prize will be awarded to the winner if under 18 years.

Ingredients:

6 oz (175g) self-raising flour
4 oz (100g) soft margarine
4 oz (100g) light muscovado sugar
5 oz (150g) sultanas
4 oz (100g) ready-to eat dried apricots, chopped
3 oz (75g) glacé cherries
2 medium eggs

Icing Ingredients:

4 oz (100g) icing sugar, sifted
1 tablespoon apricot jam
2 ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped
1 tablespoon water

Method:

Pre-heat the oven to 160℃/325℉/Gas 3. Lightly grease and base line a 2lb (900g) loaf tin with greased greaseproof paper.

First prepare the cherries. Quarter, wash and thoroughly dry on kitchen paper. Break the eggs into a large bowl and then measure in the remaining cake ingredients including the cherries. Beat well until the mixture is smooth. Turn into prepared tin and level the top. Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 1 hour 10 minutes or until the cake is golden brown, firm to the touch and shrinking away from the side of the tin. A fine skewer inserted into the centre of the cake should come out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes and then turn out, remove the paper and leave to cool completely on a wire rack.

For the icing, measure the sifted icing sugar into a bowl. Heat the apricot jam and water together until the jam melts then pour onto the icing sugar. Mix to a smooth spreading consistency, then spoon over the top of the cake. Decorate the cake by sprinkling the chopped apricots down the centre of the cake.

That I’d rather see than be one.

PR31 – 99 Dogs

I saw two people, heading off for a walk
with 99 dogs in a pack.
So, I asked them why they had so many dogs,
and they thought for a while and said back,
“We’ve tried having different numbers of dogs
from a lot to hardly any.
The lesson we’ve learned is 98 is not enough
but 100 dogs is too many.”
